The Kardashian Kulture: A Celebrity Obsessed Society.

I can proudly say I’ve never watched an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, but the mere fact that I know of it’s existence, and the name of every member of their family concerns me. It’s like they’ve invaded my private space, they’ve pushed their way into my mind and thoughts, and I don’t like it one bit.

This post isn’t entirely about the Kardashians but it seems the best place to start. My main problem stems from, why they’re even famous in the first place. Kim Kardashian was a socialite who happened to have sex with an rnb singer and record it. From this she is now probably the most famous woman on the planet and I think we should be ashamed of ourselves as a society that we let this happen. It only sets a bad example for the generation growing up who value money and fame over real authentic values such as love, honesty and integrity and hard work.

While looking into this I was astounded to find out that Scott Disick, who is famous soley for being the ex partner of a woman (Kourtney) who’s famous for being the sister of someone who made a sex tape, has over 5 million followers on Twitter. That’s the size of a small country, incredible!

The whole family are indeed, famous for nothing. That doesn’t stop them from having a huge self important, ever deserving ego. They have ventured into numerous business projects from books to perfume to iOS apps, anything where they can make quick buck from the unwitting public who happily throw their cash at them whilst totally in awe.

A huge reason why these ‘celebrity’ humans are famous is the beacuse of the way the media reports on them on a daily basis. They are never out of the news. What if there’s no story in their boring lives I hear you ask? They’ll create a story to keep them in the news! I dream of a day where there’s a universal media filter for print, online and television where you can block such terms as ‘Kardashian’ and you never have to hear of them again, therfor they cease to exist (to you at least).

When you’re famous for nothing other than actually seeking fame, it can cause a problem in how we evaluate our own lives. Celebrities are often known for doing something really well, and we naturally gravitate toward those celebrities who are experts in areas that we’re interested in ourselves.

Young girls and boys are now idolising these dim-witted, dull, unintelligent celebrities. They compare themselves to these people who are insanely rich and beautiful and with perfect bodies (at least after photoshop), and how can they help but have concerns about themselves?

The whole celebrity circus detracts away from what is real in life, what matters. It changes what we think matters and alters our take on reality. I hope we step away from this in years to come, and as a society we don’t make it the norm to be famous for ‘being famous’.
